By all measures, Mays Prep's first parent night was a huge success. Community members, school officials, and various other interested persons were in attendance; some came to learn more about the plans for the new school, and others came simply to enroll their children into one of the city's new startup charter schools.
Gary Robichaux, the Recovery School District's Executive Director for Pre-K thru 8th grade schools commented, "I think people are really curious about what's going on over here."
Curious is an understatement. The room was brimming with excitement and eager anticipation as our principal and founder Duke Bradley outlined the school's mission, vision, and core values. In a presentation that lasted about 20 minutes, Mr. Bradley reminded parents that, "now is the time for us to make real the notion that we have toward ensuring that every child has access to high quality education – but it begins with each of you gathered here this evening."
The event also featured representatives from organizations who have partnered with Mays Prep to deliver auxiliary services to the school. Erika McConduit, Vice President of Programs for the Urban League of Greater New Orleans and Stephen Barrett of Life Enhancement Services of Louisiana made stirring presentations.
Founding Board Members were also in attendance, working hard to make the event seamless - and seamless it was. Guests were treated to a hot dinner while the details of our first year of operation were summarized. Vice Chair Sidney Barthelemy said, "We wanted to be respectful of people's time and show our appreciation for them coming out – and I think we accomplished that.
"I couldn't have been more pleased with how it all turned out."
